BRIEF
Every year, 8 million tons of plastic waste generated on land reach the ocean, causing irreparable damage to marine fauna and flora. "Porto Santo without Marine Waste" (Porto Santo Sem Lixo Marinho) campaign, with the support of WWF and ANP aims to make all the people aware of the need to think about what they bring, consume and what they discard on the island of Porto Santo (Portugal). It is up to all the community to be part of the waste management process, through a reduction in the use of waste disposable materials, a bet on reusable materials and recycling. To bring up a serious and sensitive cause two mascots were the faces selected for this campaign. Inspired by the two vulnerable animals affected by the marine waste, we were invited to develop the full campaign with the two hosts: a monk seal and a caretta caretta turtle.

IDEA
On World Nature Conservation Day, the Porto Santo Without Marine Waste campaign presented the mascots João and Tristão, the duo's goal was to appeal to residents and visitors to help protect the island's biodiversity by reducing plastic waste through the social networks of the partners, billboards spread across the island and the support of key partners, such as Ana Aeroportos, Porto Santo Line and local hotels.

A "membership label" was assigned to all establishments, during 2021, that were committed to the campaign criteria and goals.

The challenge was to create a bond of empathy with the victims without using the traditional shock campaign images. The idea behind it was to subtly present two cute mascots which are being harmed by the litter and plastic that ends up in oceans. The irony of cuteness v.s cruelty in a choked seal and a trapped little turtle, which speak to kids and grown ups.
